Diagnostic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to image various soft tissues of the body. The internal composition of various organs are visualized, an advantage over radiology, where only the contour of an organ is seen.

Primary uses are for imaging the abdominal cavity and other soft tissues. The heart is also commonly imaged with ultrasound and the technique is called “echocardiography”.
