Heat and Cryotherapy
Heat is typically used 72 hours from the time of injury or surgery and for chronic conditions. Heat therapy is the use of a warm gel or herbal pack over an injured area. Heat increases blood flow to an injured area to promote healing. Heat can decrease pain and muscle spasms and increase the extensibility of collagen allowing for improved stretching.
Cryotherapy is the use of ice or a cold gel pack and typically is applied within 72 hours following an acute injury or post-operative situation. It is also used following exercise to prevent inflammation from occurring. Cryotherapy reduces bleeding, swelling, and pain. It can decrease muscle spasms and speed healing.
